Symphonic Science: Orchestrating the Future of Epilepsy Care | 2024 STM Public Lecture
Society is in the midst of Medical 4.0 - a slate of technologies and new disciplines described as the fourth industrial revolution. This transformation promises to radically address some of the most challenging medical and healthcare related challenges faced by humankind.
But, for many people living everyday with chronic brain conditions, it cannot come fast enough.
Renowned clinician and neuroscientist, Professor Patrick Kwan, is working to change lives for people with epilepsy and other neurological conditions so they have the best possible outcomes.
Patrick speaks on bringing together clinicians, researchers, medical engineers, data scientists and people with lived experience as the best strategy to develop breakthroughs to meet important and challenging needs. It’s a process akin to a harmonic symphony of teamwork, rather than an impersonal assembly line full of parts. And it's all about not accepting the status quo.
He addresses the extraordinary range and depth of the creativity, innovation, collaboration and collective synthesis underpinning this seismic shift in medical research.
From personalising treatment for an individual using AI, to reprogramming stem cells to capture the essence of what makes each of us unique, and wearable biosensors to put diagnosis in your hands, this tour of medtech and out-of-the-box scientific inquiry, culminates in his vision for the future of epilepsy research.

    I was looking for an video to explain the Low FODMAP diet to a client. This is excellent! Thanks Monash. I do wish you would explore SIBO as well tho. I was on the LOW FODMAP diet for years to quell my symptoms, but it wasn't until I addressed SIBO that I really felt better.

    I wish more people addressed their problems (IBS-D in my case) by searching for serious scientific studies like this one, instead of going for instagram, or 60 second videos on fb with ukelele and whistles for background music that show a few "facts" on white uppercase letters.

    Some corrections from an old timey tech Not just water makes the image- fat too- and materials that are not water and/or not fat for contrast I think you meant north-south and south-north when describing parallel/antiparallel "spinning" is not the same as "precessing"- a spinning top, as gravity starts to overcome it, starts to wobble around its original vertical axis- that wobble (not the spin) is the precession He does not describe the spin echo sequence adequately- there is more than a 90deg flip- after a pause ("tau"), there is another flip of 180deg in spin echo Never is just a 90deg flip radio pulse used No mention here of radio waves, radio frequencies, just antennas- as if the hydrogen is detected in some mysterious way- a grave error Not University-worthy

      @MonashSTM 6 років тому

      Dear eppurse, Reply from Jerome Maller: Thankyou for your comments. This video was intended as a very basic introduction to MRI as a general response to the questions posed by many of the subjects I have been involved in scanning over the years.Hence, mentioning a 180 degree flip would necessitate introducing terms such as phasing/dephasing and spin-echo (and then GRE). On that note, I do not mention radio waves or RF as that is venturing into often confusing detail. If I went into that depth, I would also touch upon k-space, FFT, coil design, TR, TE, TI, T1, T2, EPI, and the various types of acquisition techniques which are all beyond the intended scope of the video.

    If basically the entire small intestine and large intestine is affected, why do I only fell pain in the lower gut, just below my belly button? Also, I was under the impression that most of the pain comes from the large intestine where undigested stuff is eaten by bacteria which give off gas and other substances that cause the pain.

    My son missed 5 months of school with out of control IBS. Finally found a pediatric nutritionist who worked with us to change his diet to low FODMAPs (no one else even knew what this was). 2 years later, he's 12 years old and you would never know that he had such horrible problems. He knows how to "test" foods that are new and has successfully been able to add many foods back into his diet, some completely and others with limits. Life changing for him and the family. I just wish more American brands were tested. Thank you Monash University!
