Symphonic Science: Orchestrating the Future of Epilepsy Care | 2024 STM Public Lecture
Society is in the midst of Medical 4.0 - a slate of technologies and new disciplines described as the fourth industrial revolution. This transformation promises to radically address some of the most challenging medical and healthcare related challenges faced by humankind.
But, for many people living everyday with chronic brain conditions, it cannot come fast enough.
Renowned clinician and neuroscientist, Professor Patrick Kwan, is working to change lives for people with epilepsy and other neurological conditions so they have the best possible outcomes.
Patrick speaks on bringing together clinicians, researchers, medical engineers, data scientists and people with lived experience as the best strategy to develop breakthroughs to meet important and challenging needs. It’s a process akin to a harmonic symphony of teamwork, rather than an impersonal assembly line full of parts. And it's all about not accepting the status quo.
He addresses the extraordinary range and depth of the creativity, innovation, collaboration and collective synthesis underpinning this seismic shift in medical research.
From personalising treatment for an individual using AI, to reprogramming stem cells to capture the essence of what makes each of us unique, and wearable biosensors to put diagnosis in your hands, this tour of medtech and out-of-the-box scientific inquiry, culminates in his vision for the future of epilepsy research.

I was looking for an video to explain the Low FODMAP diet to a client. This is excellent! Thanks Monash. I do wish you would explore SIBO as well tho. I was on the LOW FODMAP diet for years to quell my symptoms, but it wasn't until I addressed SIBO that I really felt better.
my friend has recommended this and she is so much happier since being on this diet.
I'm a little late to the party but this video saved my life not even kidding thank you
Wow that was an amazing explanation - thank-you so much
Those graphics are amazing.
If only all PhD presentations were as witty and articulate as this one!
What a tremendously well-made, clear video! I recommend it to anyone with IBS or just curiosity. The title "Grand Tour Down Under" is perfect too.
I wish more people addressed their problems (IBS-D in my case) by searching for serious scientific studies like this one, instead of going for instagram, or 60 second videos on fb with ukelele and whistles for background music that show a few "facts" on white uppercase letters.
The diet helped me a lot. I am on it for 6 weeks and no way I am going to come back to old habits.
This is an amazing video I'll be showing my patients who consults for IBS symptoms ... which are quite a few!
Some corrections from an old timey tech Not just water makes the image- fat too- and materials that are not water and/or not fat for contrast I think you meant north-south and south-north when describing parallel/antiparallel "spinning" is not the same as "precessing"- a spinning top, as gravity starts to overcome it, starts to wobble around its original vertical axis- that wobble (not the spin) is the precession He does not describe the spin echo sequence adequately- there is more than a 90deg flip- after a pause ("tau"), there is another flip of 180deg in spin echo Never is just a 90deg flip radio pulse used No mention here of radio waves, radio frequencies, just antennas- as if the hydrogen is detected in some mysterious way- a grave error Not University-worthy
Dear eppurse, Reply from Jerome Maller: Thankyou for your comments. This video was intended as a very basic introduction to MRI as a general response to the questions posed by many of the subjects I have been involved in scanning over the years.Hence, mentioning a 180 degree flip would necessitate introducing terms such as phasing/dephasing and spin-echo (and then GRE). On that note, I do not mention radio waves or RF as that is venturing into often confusing detail. If I went into that depth, I would also touch upon k-space, FFT, coil design, TR, TE, TI, T1, T2, EPI, and the various types of acquisition techniques which are all beyond the intended scope of the video.
Super video!
Thank you I am going to try it
raw vegan fodmap diet truely difficult
If you have any questions about aspects of the diet for particular dietary requirements, email the FODMAP team on fodmap.feedback@monash.edu
So no apple a day keeps the doctor away.
Sad but true for IBS sufferers, as apples contain fructose, a monosaccharide, the 'M' referred to in 'FODMAP'. See more at: www.monashfodmap.com/about-fodmap-and-ibs/
BEST EXPLANATION THERE IS!
Hi I've had ibs for a long time now I've basically tried everything I also had a igg test for celiac disease which was normal and also took antibiotic rifaxamin which didn't help at all and every food that I eat gives me discomfort (ibs symtoms) what I want to know is that is this app helpful because my doctor said he can't do anything and I'm out of options.
Dear Umair M, sorry to hear you are not doing well. The app is a user guide for people pursuing the low FODMAP diet, usually in conjunction with a medical practitioner or dietitian's diagnosis. Please see more about the Monash University Low FODMAP diet, research and app at www.monashfodmap.com/. If you have particular questions, you can email the research dietitian team on fodmap.feedback@monash.edu.
Amazing animations!
Thank you for making it so easy to understand. Very much appreciated.
Need to stress use of a different chopping boards used for veg and then swap board for meat.
Thanks for the observation, that is indeed good kitchen hygiene.
God bless you all. The FODMAP diet has help me.
Can having your gallbladder removed also contribute to poor gut health?
Please email the fodmap.feedback@monash.edu team with any questions about the diet and their research. Medical questions are best directed to your medical practitioner.

Thank you! This diet has given me instant relief to crippling pain
Very helpful. Thank you
Dear Spencer Williams, thanks for your interest - once you click the 'Show more' button, all those details are there. In answer to your comments, the paper, “Arginine Methylation Catalysed by PRMT1 [the enzyme in question] is Required for B-Cell Activation and Differentiation” was published in Nature Communications, www.nature.com/articles/s41467-017-01009-1.
Very mysterious...
I wonder where the work was published...
Hmm...I wonder what that enzyme could be.
Bravo ! 👍
Thank you thank you so much!! i am so happy that i found this app!!!!!!!
The best explanation I've found yet! Thank you.
Quality of life GAME CHANGER. Thank you guys. You've helped change my world. :)
This is one of the hardest things to follow after having h-pylori. Thanks for the video i appreciate x
Nice job
Hello Dr Shiva! I wanted to ask can this treatment help me to get ride of my previous skin graft that was done 5 years ago in Iran? I mean can i remove the previous graft and replace a artificial skin? If it's not possible how can i improve the appearance of graft skins that are so ugly?
Dear Farza Neh , Dr Akbarzadeh's unit does basic research on artificial skin for burns wound healing and are unable to provide you with clinical advice. Sorry, we can't help you directly. See more about the research at: www.med.monash.edu.au/surgery/alfred/research/skin-tissue-lab.html
I wish I could eat a low FODMAP diet, but I'm only 13, so I have to eat what I'm served...😭 I eat healthy, though, and that has definitely helped. Also I try to avoid dairy.
miamar glad you eat a healthy diet. If you do have IBS, then you will need medical advice about which diet will work best for you, or other strategies (such as hypnotherapy). If you have any questions about the low FODMAP diet, please email the team at fodmap.feedback@monash.edu
Amazing! Are the researchers involved also the inventors FODMAP diet? Seems Nobel Prize worthy :)!
Thankyou Harm Hoeks , appreciated! Yes, the Monash University research team did develop the low FODMAP diet. See more about it at www.med.monash.edu/cecs/gastro/fodmap/
A great video to help explain to my family what is going on with me!!!
Very good this helped ma a lot, many thanks
If basically the entire small intestine and large intestine is affected, why do I only fell pain in the lower gut, just below my belly button? Also, I was under the impression that most of the pain comes from the large intestine where undigested stuff is eaten by bacteria which give off gas and other substances that cause the pain.
jackson32 , thanks for your interest. For answering your questions, please write to the Monash University Low FODMAP research team, at fodmap.feedback@monash.edu.
My son missed 5 months of school with out of control IBS. Finally found a pediatric nutritionist who worked with us to change his diet to low FODMAPs (no one else even knew what this was). 2 years later, he's 12 years old and you would never know that he had such horrible problems. He knows how to "test" foods that are new and has successfully been able to add many foods back into his diet, some completely and others with limits. Life changing for him and the family. I just wish more American brands were tested. Thank you Monash University!
Great visualization! On the app, is it possible to get a graph of BM history over time?
Linda Fox, thanks very much for your positive feedback. For answering your question about the app, please write to the Monash University Low FODMAP research team, at fodmap.feedback@monash.edu.
Brilliant work. Great educational introduction.
